PXE-booting DamnSmallLinux -- the easy way [updated]

PXE-Booting or Etherbooting usually is a quite complex thing that usually involves three servers (DHCP, TFTP and NFS) as well as some modifications to the kernel and the ramdisk of the linux system that has to be booted via network.

I slightly modified the initial ramdisk to boot DSL just using DHCP and TFTP and thus significantly reduce the amount of configuration needed...

Setting up a boot server now is done in less than five minutes!

DSL in the press

Since friday people living in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and probably some other European countries will find the magazine LINUX INTERN with a bootable DVD with DSL (0.9.0.1) and other Linux distributions on their newsstand.

There is no sepate article on DSL in this issue, but it is used as an example to demonstrate how SYSLINUX works for booting from USB stick.

As mentioned earlier, the DVD uses Grub as bootloader which is much more comfortable than navigating through F-keys and entering cheatcodes (which is still possible). If the DSL community is interested and there is a chance of convincing the chiefs to make it the default bootloader, I will write (and document) a configuration for german and english and hope that other DSL users will translate keymaps and menu entries to other languages.

Booting DSL CD with Grub

I just wanted to inform you that I just did a small remastering using Grub as bootloader. This allows selecting boot options with the arrow keys of your keyboard.

The remastered version is available with English or German default keyboard. If you are interested in the more comfortable booting, download the DSL-Grub ISO.

A bootscreen is available here

Please do not be confused by the renaming of the kernel and the ramdisk. A few days ago a did a massive multiboot DVD for a large german Linux mag (available in January) which will contain several live distributions bootable -- one of them is DSL of course...
