By running x setup I can get either my Thinkpads trackpoint working or an external USB mouse working, but never both. Any pointers? I tried USB mouse, no USB mouse, IMPS/2 mouse, and PS2 mouse. This is on a HD install of the latest DSL.

TinyX supports only one mouse device at a time. If the external and internal mouse work through different devices, you'll need either Xorg or XFree86 (full X servers) to have both at the same time.
