| I am running dsl-n RC-2 from a usb HDD install and ocassionally when I reboot dsl-n (both RC-1 and RC-2 have had this problem) the desktop manager that loads is blackbox and not fluxbox. The problem persists even after subsequent reboots. The only thing available for use in blackbox is an xterm but I am new to linux so even though I could probably fix the problem from there I have no idea how to. The only way that I have figured out to fix the problem is to swap out the backup.tar.gz with one that I saved to the hard drive of my computer. I then have to update all of the settings to the way I had them previously. If anyone could help me with this I would appreciate it. |

We don't have blackbox in DSL-N.
What appears to be happening is that your backup is not being restored and you are missing the .fluxbox directory in your home directory. What size is your pendrive? Where is the backup file normally saved? |

Roberts, thanks for your prompt response, I have really enjoyed using dsl-n.
I am using a 128 MB lexar Jumpdrive (pendrive). The backup is saved to the pendrive as a file called backup.tar.gz the file changes in size depending on what I have saved to my home directory so I am pretty sure that that is where the files are being backed up to. |

Oh, this sends up a red flag to me. Not knowing how much data is in your backup, still...
On a 128MB pendrive there is not too much room for the backup.tar.gz. It might be the case that the backup may run out of room and therefore the backup.tar.gz becomes corrupt and not restored. That could explain your observations. Could this be the situation? |

It is a possibility that the pendrive is running out of space, and corrupting the backup file as it updates at each shutdown. Actually, I recently started using a second pendrive (my main one for windows data) to save data (but not apps) onto because of the limited space on the first. I will keep an eye on the pendrive space issue. I may have tried to save too much onto my home directory (at 128 MB I can't add many extra features  ).
Last night I upgraded to RC3 (looks pretty good), and so far have not had any problems, I will keep a keen eye on the size of my home directory. Hopefully I will not ecounter this problem again. If so I will upgrade to a larger pendrive and see what happens. Thanks |
