Sounds like a really cool watch. I looked at Knoppix last night and it had some nice stuff. I need to read how you write to NTFS and give it a try. It will be interesting to see how small you can get 5.0.1 and still keep all the functionality.

I've torrented both the DVD and CD release of Knoppix 5.01 and gave it a try.

A very nice feature of Koppix5 is that unionfs (blending the CD archive and the ramdisk) now is an integral part, started right at the beginning after the ramdisk creation. Booted from CD or "frugal" (the term doesn't exist there, but I copied the CD to a CF card and added grub) the whole file system is writeable. This would raise the myDSL extensions to really new possibilities! (I still have to find out how to persist the unionfs changes.)

IMHO this would make a killer base for DSL-N!

Just as a followup, I spun up the 5.0.1 CD, mounted an NTFS drive, chose to make it r/w (right click option), moved (not copied) a file from the ntfs partition to my desktop then moved the file back to the ntfs part. I got a warning about not being able to perserve permissions but other than that, it worked well. That's great to see it that simple. Again, no idea how big the base would have to stay to accomodate all of these extras like unionfs, udev, ntfs, etc...

BTW - I know KDE is the focus in Knoppix but I hate to see distros include fluxbox as an option and just give it the ugliest theme possible. Smile

I agree.

There is no good reason why you can't use a theme/wallpaper that is similar to the default KDE style for that distro.

The only reason I can think of to keep things simple is:

Some users who choose desktop=fluxbox are choosing because they have limited resources (including graphics cards and CPU), so these users are better off with a basic, but relatively unpretty, style like "Minimal".

Currently DSL-N just as DSL are binary releases based on Knoppix versions.
Additional modules are created from the live Knoppix environment.

Yes. It is very simple to use Knoppix 4.0.2 as the development environment even from booting it as a liveCD. With unionfs the newly created module or binary is ready for testing with DSL-N.
