SOLVED -- I found the solution on the PuppyLinux Forum. Much too simple, but I would have never figured it out and obviously no one here has either yet ---> Must issue the following command to use the printer on USB ----> modprobe usblp
Seems to tell the OS to use the usb port for the printer. BTW the HP900 CUPS/GIMP driver worked but so far the HP900 Foomatic one does not -for me at least.
******
I haeve been trying everything I can thing of and read about to get my HP952 printer going through the USB port. (see HP952 USB Problem entryl below). Still no luck. DSL-N and/or CUPS does not want to open the usb port for theprinter (though I have no problem with my jumpdrive. Icon't to get a "Unable to open usb file /dev/usb/lp0 -- I can;t even find or know where to look for this file.
Can anyone offer some help on how I might further track doen this problem. If I am in the wrong place pleae let me know.
Thanks
JMF

If this is a USB2.0 port then that may be your problem.
It was just reported that USB2.0 was not loading.
I wll have USB2.0 loading in the next RC.
In the meantime, you could try manually loading the module.
$ sudo modprobe ehci_hcd |

Thank you for the suggestion.
My laptop is about 5 years old. It is a Compaq 1200XL. I am pretty certain it is a 1.x USB not 2.0. I has an AMD chip. I am running DSL-N as a Live CD.
I tried a modprobe manual load as suggested but that did not seem to do anything. I treid it before I did anything and again after I loaded drivers. I still get following message when I try to print a Test Page:
"Unable to open USB port device file "/dev/usb/lp0": No such device"
I also tried printing from ABI word and nothing there either.
When I look under /dev/usb/lp0 I see a long list of items and can find an "lp0" but it is in orange and dated July 14 with 0 bytes. Not sure of this helps you at all.
Any other things I might do or places I might look?
Thank Roberts for any any further help you can offer.
