Hello all,

I have been using DSL-N RC1 for a while and my D-link wireless card worked just fine. I read that Madwifi drivers were put into the ISO. Now, I just downloaded RC2 and to my suprise, I couldn't get my card to work. Does anyone know if those drivers were changed or anything like that? I really like how DSL-N works on my old laptop. I would very much like to continue using it but ndiswrapper is something I have never had to use with DSL-N and I would like to know if roberts changed things in this reguards.

Thanks again for the hard work people have done to make my old laptop come back to life.

roberts,

Thanks for your quick reply. I will wait and continue to use RC1 for the time being and wait for your next RC. On and old Pll 366 with only 64MB of RAM, DSL-N works great. I really only use firefox and gaim and they just work so keep up the good work.

roberts,

I was very excited to see you have RC3 out. Last night I saw that you added the madwifi drivers back in. Thank you. I downloaded RC3 and put the cd into my laptop and I hit the control panel and just like I do with RC1 I put in atho instead of etho, I put in the network name and my wep just like RC1 and hit ok and right away I get connection failed in RC3. What could I be doing wrong. I know I haven't given you much detail but I do the exact things as with RC1 and that works. Please help, I really like your product and the new RC3 looks very nice from what I used. Know that I really only use the laptop for the web and chatting so a lot of other stuff never gets used.

Very frustrating. I placed those modules in there at your request.

The main reason to be binary based distro, is to capitalize on the tested kernel, modules, and support scripts.

As a single developer, I could not possibly have every card / device to test on. So blindly compiling modules is not very productive. Therefore being based on Knoppix 4.0.2 and using those kernels and modules including madwifi, one would think it would have a chance.

Maybe there is still hope?

What does lsmod show? Are any modules loaded?
What does iwconfig show?
What happens when you manually try to insmod the modules?

Maybe a member also has this card and can contribute some ideas.

I did what you asked up to a point. I will give you what I have done so far. Take a quick look and see what you think. As you can see RC3 is not activating the ath_pci module. I am not sure why... Please, this is were I get stuck. I am not sure what else to do. If someone could please stear me in a direction of how to install a module in DSL-N. By the way, roberts, that you for adding the madwifi for me. I know your super busy and for you to do that, I am grateful.

With RC3

as root, I did the following: modprobe ath_pci the error message I got was: FATAL: Error inserting ath_pci (/lib/modules/2.6.12/net/ath_pci.ko): Invalid module format.

as root, I did the following: lsmod
I got this output:

Module Size Used by
ath_rate_onoe 10632 0
wlan 102364 1 ath_rate_onoe
ath_hal 150480 0

as root, I did the following: iwconfig
I got this output:

lo no wireless extensions.

with RC1

as root, did the following: lsmod "when I didn't go to the control panel and connect using lwconfig in the control panel"
I got this output:

Module Size Used by
ath_pci 53024 0
ath_rate_onoe 10632 1 ath_pci
wlan 102867 3 ath_pci, ath_rate_onoe
ath_hal 150480 2 ath_pci

as root, did the following: lsmod "after connecting using the control panel lwconfig"
I got this output:

Module Size Used by
ath_pci 53024 0
ath_rate_onoe 10632 1 ath_pci
wlan 102867 4 wlan_wep, ath_pci, ath_rate_onoe
ath_hal 150480 2 ath_pci

as root, I did the following: iwconfig
I got this output:

lo no wireless extensions.

ath0 IEEE 802.11g with a lot more about this connection

Well, the work-around would be ndiswrapper.
In the simplest form:

1. ndiswrapper -i net5211.inf
2. modprobe ndiswrapper
3. iwconfig wlan0 essid your_sid_here
4. pump -i wlan0

Of course replacing net5211.inf with your card's WinXP driver.

Hello all,

Your going to see how retarded I am. I have read that you have to use the ini file with ndiswrapper, but roberts told me to use an inf file. I tried to get the inf or ini file roberts told me to get. It is ar5211.ini or ar5211.inf but when I took out the d-link cd and searched for it it wasn't on the cd. Ok, no big deal, I went to dlinks website and downloaded the newest zip file. Well, there is not an ar5211.ini or inf file in that zip file there are ar5211.sys files though. There is a large cab file too. Ok, at this point I am hanging my head in shame. Could someone please help me get my head out of my a##, please. What should I do now. I have tried to follow the instructions people have given me and trust me I have googled around but either I am just too stupid or I am not looking for the correct things.

Thanks

It is actually two files that are needed, an .inf and .sys
In your case the two files:

net5211.inf and ar5211.sys

These two files should be in the same location.
They could be in your Windows partition, in which case you would have to mount that partition.
Or they could be stored locally in your home directory.

redleg, maybe some good news for your netcard and madwifi.

I borrowed a card with atheros chipset.
I saw your observed error on ath_pci

This is the temporary fix that worked for me:

1. Boot using the nodhcp option.

This will ensure that no pump is hanging around to prevent ip request later when requested. Next as soon as the system boots up, as user root:

2. # depmod -a
3. # modprobe ath_pci
4. # iwconfig eth0 essid your_sid_here
5. # pump -i eth0

It worked! Seems that I missed doing a depmod -a during RC3 build.
I will, of course, correct this in the next build.

roberts,

Right now I am away from my laptop, I am in the Guard and currently on a military assignment, but I will check out your fix as soon as I get home. I hate to say it but if your fix works, I am kinda glad it wasn't a stupidity, but just a simple bug in this great new OS. You have no idea how stupid I was feeling that I couldn't get this to work.

Again, thanks for putting so much time into trying to solve my problem.

roberts,

Thanks for RC4. I have a problem but I can easily get around this one. I see when DSL-N boots eth0 gets activated and is backgrounding. My problem is when I broadcast my SSID and don't use wep my wireless card now works great. Thanks, but and isn't there aways a but. But I don't broadcast my SSID and I use wep to make my home network a little more secure. Now I go to the dslpanel and hit the netcardconfig and if I use dhcp and hit yes both lights light up on my wireless card but I can't get on any webpages, and I assume that is because I haven't put in my wep code. But if I hit NO and just hit enter through all the questions it asks and then it asked only once for my SSID and wep code, and now it remembers them, and after I hit enter through all those screens, the dhcp screen comes back up. If I hit yes then I can get online with no problem. I know there must be an easy fix but I have tried to go to the Iwconfig and if I put in my SSID and wep the computer locks up or if I go to Wlanconfig it locks up. Trust me it is a little frustrating to hit enter like 12 times right after booting the computer but hell this is still in the DSL-N is still only at RC4. The rest of the OS works great and I can live with what is going on but if someone knows what I might try then great, because as you know I will try just about anything. I really like how this made this old laptop come back to life. I noticed some of the mydsl extentions are not the same as with RC1. I had a few that I used alot but now they are not there. I can only assume that the ones now their are tested and work without any problems. I can now use gimp without any problem so again thanks.

Are you booting with nodhcp? This could cause your pump to fail as it is still waiting for an answer from a normal boot up.
I use an atheros based builtin wireless with no sid announce and wep with no problems. I just put the wireless commands into a file, could be /opt/bootlocal.sh for automatic setup during booting. Or into a separate file, eg, mywireless.sh for execution when I want to use that particular wireless network. Depands on how mobile you are.

#!/bin/bash
pkill pump
iwconfig eth0 essid put_target_sid_here
sleep 1
iwconfig eth0 key 99:88:77:66:55:44:33:22:11:00:99:88:77
sleep 1
pump -i eth0

If this is added to /opt/bootlocal.sh then it should auto setup during booting.
If you make this a script stored in /home/dsl then you should execute it as root (sudo)
Or even make a desktop icon with the icontool to make it easy to connect.
It is up to you.

Roberts,

I also have a DWL-G630. Mine, however, does not use the Atheros chipset. It is a revision B.

I also tried using ndiswrapper against the winxp drivers from dlink's website, but after doing:

ndiswrapper-i /path_to_drivers/driver.inf
modprobe ndiswrapper

I still didn't see any interface listed in ifconfig.

What am I doing wrong? Can I use prizm2? How do I get my interface up?

Any help is appreciated.

Seems this card keep changing the chipset.
I would suggest to try using ndiswrapper.
From your lspci it appears that your chipset is an ACX 111
This is described in item #34 on the ndiswrapper support
site.
