if I boot up DSL with:
dsl tohd=/dev/hd1

what happens?

Will it permanently install on my computer?
Will I loose all of my windows files?

Nope..

It should attempt to copy the large /KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX file
off of the cdrom , onto a partition of whatever drive you select,
and then attempt to boot from it. ( ..if it CAN write to the drive = not NTFS, etc..)

You posted " dsl tohd=/dev/hd1 "
This syntax is incomplete, and should fail..

It may be a typo on your part.. If not, read on.

It should read " dsl tohd=/dev/hdXx "

'X' = physical drive ( assuming 4 possible IDe devices )
hda = Primary Master
hdb = Primary Slave
hdc = Secondary Master
hdd = Secondary Slave

'x' = partition of stated drive

So, The FIRST PARTITION of your FIRST HARD DRIVE
would be " /dev/hda1 " etc..
