OK, I was making some serious progress, but I think I botched somthing bigtime.
I was messing around in the file manager, and I think I deleted the wrong file. Now my web-browser won't work.
I tried re-burning the CD, but it is still not working. I'm running a live CD and doing just a normal boot.
Is there a way to repair the damage?

| what exactly do you mean by re-burning the dvd? you could always start over from scratch. You could also look at a fresh cd and compare it to yours, especially in the area of the things that you were deleting. |

What I mean is, I went back to the website, downloaded a fresh copy to a new CD and tried to run it live. Still no internet. The browser does not even come up.
This is interesting: when I go to the control panel, the DCHP button looks like it is depressed, though I'm not messing with it. |

you could try running the command pump -i eth0 i think you have to run it as root.
this should hopefully make your internet work. It's supposed to this automatically on boot but sometimes it fails. |

OK. I tried running tha pump -i eth0 command. Still, when I go to apps->browser, no browser comes up.
I downloaded firefox from the MyDSL menu, and I now have a browser that surfs the net.
So, my question is this.
If I re-download DSL and burn it to a CD, should I have a fresh, new CD with all default settings, or does it retrieve past information somehow from my computer and stay screwed up?

DSL-N restores your data automactically if the backup/restore system had been used. Look at DSLpanel, Backup/Restore. It will display the device used.
To boot without using the auto restore feature use:
dsl norestore |

the norestore boot worked perfectly.
Lesson learned -- don't delete things unless YOU are the one that created them!
