RC4 is now posted http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/damnsmall/dsl-n/current/
Change log for dsl-n-0.1RC4
1. Added "noprompt noeject" to default boot options for frugal installs.
2. Fixed madwifi wireless.
3. Fixed chpasswd vs passwd. "secure" boot option now works correctly.
4. Added gnu-utils into the base iso.
5. Fixed USB2 not loading bug
6. Improved mydsl=hdxy when specified to not also search this makes it
consistent with restore boot option.
7. Enhanced exitcheck to prompt warning if no backup device is selected when requested to save special settings.
8. Fixed multi user hard drive install bug.
9. Added murgaLua Lua/Fltk development toolkit.

Hey Robert, I just installed this on a Pentium II 233MHz system just to test it, it works good! This is just what I was looking for. Thanks,
Joel

This may be obvious to others, but I'm fairly new to DSL-N....
Can I download DSL 4 live with my DSL-3 system? Or do I need to download the ISO, burn it to a CD, and boot/install from that?
So far, DSL-N is great, and I'm looking forward to testing RC4, but would be really nice to support my lazy since.
Thanks

I like this release candidate so far. It is the first one of DSL-N that I've tried so I can't compare it to the other ones. My major issue is that I am unable to mount my usb stick using the mount tool, unless it was plugged in on boot.
@pat
As far as I know you just download the .iso while you're running RC3, and then burn it. This will require you to boot from usb or be running with toram option. Then you put in the RC4 disk, and reboot your computer, and you should be up and running RC4. |

|
|
I've noticed an intermittant problem with the "eraser head" pointing stick (actually an Alps combo pointing stick and touchpad) on my Dell Latitude D400 and RC4 - I did not try any of the earlier release candidates so I cannot say if this also applies to them.
I'm using RC4 from USB - sometimes when I boot, the pointing stick works and sometimes it does not. The touchpad always works but it is far too sensitive to use properly - moving the cursor is far too easily interpreted as a click.
Maybe the issue is that I'm using XFree86.dsl (with the appropriate Alps touchpad section in the config file) which was built for Linux 2.4.x - this problem does not occur with DSL 3.0.1
If I do not use XFree86.dsl, the problem seems to be cured by setting a 3-button mouse in xsetup.sh (although I do not get any icons and the colour depth is minimal). |

|
|
In connection with the previous post, the issue is perhaps that RC4 does not appear to contain the driver synaptics.ko and thus, as per the XFree86 log file, it cannot be loaded.
Since many laptops either use the Synaptics Touchpad or Alps Glidepoint - both of which use the same driver, would it be possible to include the synaptics driver in the next release of DSL-N? |

|

Hi I've downloaded rc4 and burned the iso.
Every thing appears to work.
If I open any applictions (say terminal) as soon as I press any key on the keyboard the app. disapears. - I can't even look to see what's happening!
Compaq Armada 1560D
48M ram
200M swap available (and seems to being used)
Hope someone can give me some pointers.
Thanks

Strangely enough - since the first attempt to run the live CD when I had an apparently working system but nothing would work. - The CD has run fine and I have installed DSL-N on the hd. The only thing I can think was, that when the install script scrolled off the end of the screen, during a pause (perhaps while waiting for the dhcp server response), I hit enter a few times to try to get the info back on the screen - so I could see what was happening. Needless to say I've not done this again.
Still no network and sound but at least I've got a command prompt so I can prod around.
- Just in case any ones interested - it might be nicer if the install script could be kept to 25 x 80. Say clear the screen before the script starts to run as the image at the top seems to be the problem. This is a constant irritation - not keeping within the screen confines. X applications are the worst - configuration windows that can't be resized and are too big for you to be able to see the buttons at the bottom drive me babanas!

dsl-n defaults to 1024x768. You probably need 800x600.
Either use:
boot: dsl vga=789
or
boot: fb800x600
At the boot: prompt, hit F2 and F3 for more options.
I have a Compaq Armada SB which is similar to your 1560D. I havn't
been brave enough to try dsl-n on it until now. It normally runs dsl-3.0.1
from a pcmcia IBM microdrive because the ide bus is having problems.
Here is what I used with dsl-n:
boot: dsl base norestore vga=789 noapic noscsi noideraid nofirewire noicons minimal pcmcia usb atapicd
You may also be able to add "dma".
The ram is upgraded to 96MB, and the 233MHz Pentium MMX calculates
a setiathome enhanced workunit in about 100-120 hours. |

Hello,
First i want to say to the developpement team of DSL / DSL-N that they have probably done the most performant and easy Linux I have tested and used ; thanks for your great work !!!
So, as an old and happy user of DSL, i decided to test the last release of dsl-n on my Dell Inspiron 6000 : result : Lan ethernet card detection is OK but no detection for the onboard wireless card. does anybody have o solution ?
I also saw that there was no shortcup for LinNeighbourhood wich is present on the distro. It should be easier to have a shortcut in the menu.
I also had a problem during the hard drive installation : I have Windows XP on a NTFS partition ; I had done a Linux partition for DSL-N ; everything whent ok untill I chose GRUB as boot loader. When I restart my computer, GRUB was not well installed and none of my OS was bootable. So, I re-installed DSL-N with LILO as boot loader and now everything work fine ; Bug in the install script for GRUB ?
Thanks

LinNeighborhood is on the system menu.
Net->Samba
I have had no issues with Grub, XP, and DSL-N.
But this is with XP in the first partition as is the usual case. |
