I'm completely new to DSL (and Linux in general), so my apologies if I am guilty of asking stupid questions.
Essentially I want an OS on a USB stick that I can run from windows or boot straight into it. Is it possible to create a bootable USB stick with DSL-N on, and run it from inside windows as well (without installing anything on the windows system), or would I have to install 2 seperate versions on the USB Stick.
i.e. Should my USB drive be partitioned as follows:
/dev/sda1 - Bootable Version of DSL-N
/dev/sda2 - Version of DSL-N to run from windows
/dev/sda3 - Personal Files
OR
/dev/sda1 - DSL-N
/dev/sda2 - Personal Files
If I have to use two versions (which I think is how it needs to be done) can anybody suggest any way of maintaining the similarities between both systems? (e.g. users, installed software etc)
Cheers,
Phill |

As far as I know, Windows only allows for one partition on removeable media - i.e. a USB memory stick.
In order to be able to boot DSL-N, it would need to be on the first partition - /dev/sda1. If you install DSL-N embedded to the next partition - /dev/sda2 - I'm not sure Windows would be able to see it. |

Without installing anything to Windows would imply using Qemu.
It is possible and I had made such an embedded image on a single partition pendrive, basically use Windows unzip to a bootable pendrive and you are ready to go. However, Qemu by default is a sandbox. Limited access to real devices. Easy access to virtal devices. With DSL I had made a 64MB virtual hard drive that both Windows/Qemu and native DSL could share. Now, with a larger DSL-N, I am not sure what the starting size of a virtual hard drive would be optimal. Qemu, although, easy and slick to run DSL/DSL-N can become quite complex if your needs are truly to access real Window devices. But yes, it is possible to run as you are suggesting within a single partition. |
