If your monitor is DPMS (Display Power Management Signaling) compliant and if you use XFree86.dsl with DSL-N (or DSL) you can use the DPMS option to turn off your screen after a set amount of time to save energy/laptop battery life. Hitting any key will switch the screen back on again
Edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file:
In the "ServerLayout" section you need to add the lines (where the number in quotes, eg "10" = minutes of inactivity before the action happens)
Option "StandbyTime" "7"
Option "SuspendTime" "7"
Option "OffTime" "10"
In the "Monitor" section add the line
Option "DPMS"
As an example, the relevent sections of my XF86Config-4 file become as follows:
