Damn Small Linux - Not!

Hi,

I'm a Ubuntu user looking for the right lightweight distro for use on older machines. DSL Not is a great candidate, but there are some features I would like to see:

* Better automounting of devices (particularly USB keys)
* Hard drive install and Synaptic working ok (I want to use full-featured applications)
* Choice of window managers - Fluxbox is brilliant but I prefer ICEWM
* A more modern file manager - eg Rox or Thunar.
* Sylpheed with HTML support (I understand this is done via Dillo, haven't looked at how yet).

Are any / all of these on the drawing board for DSL Not? As a comparison, FeatherLinux has most of these, but I'm not sure how much it is being maintained. It seems to me that DSL Not is aimed at the same user group who woulduse Feather.

I know I can build my own distro with them, but I prefer to use something existing if I can. I don't believe my requirements are anything weird.

Sounds like you should try puppylinux.

Hi, I looked at Puppy. It's good, but kind of cluttered. DSL-N seemed cleaner. Also Feather, but it is no longer maintained.

I know I'm interested in different things from the DSL and DSL-N team, but I just thought I would ask the question in case their plans coincided with mine. If nothing better comes up, I'll continue with Xubuntu, which works ok provided you are selective about what apps you use.

All of my development time is currently focused on DSL. The demand remains strong for DSL and I am only one person. Only so much I can do and still have a life. We will see if I get any help on DSL-N; not sure at the moment.

If you go over to the DSL forums. You will see many improvements to DSL and lots of activity.

Can you explain further when you say 'cluttered' and DSL is 'cleaner'? What do you mean exactly?
Too many small applications with puppy?
The desktop is cluttered?

Can you explain further?

You can of course use puppy unleashed and just build your own customised puppy.

Hi,

I wouldn't like to pretend I am any sort of expert on the differences between puppy linux and dsl....I used them both as an evaluation at the same time. With Puppy it was both of the things you say - very busy desktop and lots of applications I didn't want with no obvious way to clean things up. Plus I was nervous about it having its own package management and unusual approach to NTFS filesystem.

I should probably go back and give it a second look, but that was the judgement I made at the time.

If users are interested in puppy they will go there.
