This is our initial public release of DSL-N. This release DSL-N.0.1a should be considered Alpha software and used respectively.

Thanks John for giving us dsl-not. It has taken me more than a year to learn the wisdom of dsl. Now I am a big fan of the way you want to use computers. However, I am not at the level of you and the other regulars in the dsl forum. I wanted just a little bit more. And now you have offered that too. I like very much that you keep the two separate so there won't be any confusion in design philosphy. Now to download alpha and give it a go.

Note:
There are no boot floppies as the boot image files total 2.4MB.
Therefore this is no syslinux version.
If you have both a floppy and a cdrom that can't boot isolinux, you can try Smart Boot Manager.
But then this version is for more modern computers that can boot from isolinux cdroms and USB devices.
Speaking of USB devices. please use caution. The device name in 2.6 is ubX and not sdX.
Finally, this is an alpha version. I have tried to test most features but I am sure that many items will still need to be tweaked. I finished the basic system in early Feb and have been using it on a daily basis.

Does this use udev for usb mounting instead of fstab or mtab?

dsl-n.a2.iso and md5.txt are now posted.
Fixed bugs:

1. Missing triangles in fluxbox menu.
2. Missing kbdconfig from dslpanel.
3. Missing buttons in emelfm
4. Fixed bug in mydsl-load for .dsl extensions

Hi Folks !

I realy enjoyed reading the DSL-N page, as it seems to be the exact distro that suits me. So far, I always had enjoyed Puppy Linux better tha DSL, because it had more usefull stuff out of the box.
But DSL being Debian, it has a big advantage, one can apt-get anything...

Please keep on the good works !!!

I suggest these apps : a partition tool, an antivirus (that would scan the windows partition...), cups, sane, all mplayer codecs, skype, memtest, samba(or anything to share files win win PC´s...). and a safe way to install DSL-N on a usb pendrive...

Also, about cosmetics, use less purple and dark colors as backgrounds and themes... Visually it hurts the eyes Laughing

! Maybe something smoother, less flashy would do...

Wow! DSL-N is exactly what I was waiting for! Very Happy

I was slowly losing interest in DSL because it didn't support my sound and ethernet cards because the kernel was too old.
Now, I only need something like a gparted and ethereal mydsl extensions and DSL-N will be the perfect portable rescue Linux for me!

P.S. I, too, dislike the purple theme. Some blue professional theme like AlmostX would be better, but it's just a question of taste. I'm using a custom AlmostX .dsl to replace the default theme anyways. ;P

Now something like QTparted or ntfsprogs is just what I missed yesterday on a friend's computer we were ready to install DSL(2.3) on
Could not resize his partition in order to create DSL some room, so we had to delay that.

Gparted is in the dsl extensions repository tho from a live cd boot up I couldn't get it to work.

There are other themes in the dsl extensions library as well. I recommend liquid glass personally.

i've just downloaded dsl-n.a2 , impatient to give it a try...,I hope dsl spirit is still up and running, even for brand new machines.so gnu's not unix, dsl-n is not dsl, but long life to it, keep the good work

How about giving kernel 2.6.15.3 a try since you're still in Alpha and trying diff stuff...maybe I can have better luck....currently have regular DSL on a 64MB SD card, which sits snugly inside a USB adapter using USB-ZIP and works like a hose...I added in the default Fluxbox styles and edited the font size where my 50-something eyes can read everthing...why not add those into DSL-Not...small addition and easy...currently using DSL-Not off mini-CD_R(185MB) works ok for me that way...anyway...there my two-cents worth for now Laughing

this may be a bit late but "DSL-N"? i'm gonna have trouble explaining
that to my friends. wouldn't "DSL-B" i.e B=bigger be better ?
