|

The first time I tried the "Frugal Grub Install" it exited saying the partition isn't a Linux partition. True, it had PC-BSD. So I formatted using mkfs.ext3. The error persisted. I restarted as it sugested and cfdisk from within DSL-N still reads it as a BSD partition. I booted with "dsl tohd=hda1" and it copied the KNOPPIX and LOST+FOUND and booted. This copied the files into that partition and freed my DVD drive. But that's about it.
So I rebooted from the DSL-N CD, *without* the fromhd option, but the Frugal Grub Install still fails. It still thinks this partition is a BSD.
What I am doing wrong here?
Cheers!

Maybe change the "Partition Type" in cfdisk or fdisk to "Linux" type 83 and then save the partition table. |

thanks. It worked.
But.
It rewrote my GRUB on mbr, which isn't a big prob. It gave me a few options, a normal boot and some fb options. I choose the normal boot (first option), setup Xvesa, resolution, mouse and all. Then made a mydslapps dir under /home/dsl. Downloaded apps to it. Did some work and restarted.
To my amazement, when I rebooted into DSL using the same first option, it again asked me for the Xserver configuration and upon loading, gave me a fresh system that neither had my work, nor the mydsl apps!
Where did I save my stuff too? Ramdisk? Isn't this option supposed to save everything on the hard disk?
A little dazed
UPDATE: tried editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst file through root and vi warns me that I am trying to edit a READ-ONLY file ! |

To save your user files under /home/dsl, you need to use the Backup/Restore process. See the DSL wiki for more information.
To save your extensions, you need to save them to your hard drive instead of the ramdisk, ie:
/mnt/hda3/ (if your install is on partition hda3)
As for the /boot list, you might be able to access it as Super User (IE: userid "root"), or you might need to edit the file that is on your hard drive, wherever it is located, ie:
/mnt/hda3/boot/grub/menu.lst |
