Damn Small Linux - Not!

Yep.
Just booted DSL-N for the very first time, and noticed that:
1. Keyboard and Xvesa selections dont work in DSLpanel (first thing I tried) Xvesa setting opens, but there isnt anything to select (only OK) Keyboard selection skips the selection and goes straight to ^You must restart X windows for the new keyboard to take effect^

2. On the desktop there are only 3 icons. Terminal, DSLpanel and MyDSL.
No emelfm or mozilla. why not?

3.I tried to install MyDSL extensions (snake & supertux), but they didn come anywhere. They were downloaded to /tmp, but thats all. Emelfm doesnt have mySDL-button so how are they to be installed?

But great work anyway. 35MB base system with 2.6.11 kernel. Cant wait for version 1.0!

1.selecting "dsl xsetup" solved the first problem..
Keyboard and display works OK now. Smile

but it halts if I chose the other option than Xvesa..

2. I know how to add icons (I think), so this shouldn't be a longlasting problem..

3. succeeded to install an .uci aplication (opera), which works and a gtk2 mysdl (abiword), which installed, but doesn't work... hmmm..
Are the normal .dsl files supposed to work with dsl-n?

Abiword is one of the included apps. Is the Abiword.dsl a better version? Also, I would think there will be a few broken apps because the different kernels sometimes require libraries, etc. to be in dfferent directories than other kernels.

Abword and others as listed in the change log are easiliy accessable via the menu.

You can use the icontool to make icons, if so inclinced.
I thought the trend is not to have so many icons.

Avoid extensions that are module based.
Use extreme caution with other extensions.
Many of them will work some may not.

We may need to have a topic of which extensions work with DSL-N.

One of my favorite apps is eboard. I tried loading it via mydsl. It loads and places the icon but will not function. The icon blinks when selected but that is all.

Found a nasty bug concerning dynamically loaded .dsl extensions.
I am going to fix this and post dsl-n.a2 so that testing can continue.
Look for a2 in site news soon.

Meanwhile ty for this new distro. I may run it on my desktop instead of PCLOS if I can use it with my SATA drive. Until then I've been testing the new Alpha-2 release & have a few questions.

1) I've got a frugal installation on a small TS server I run which has several partitions on hda and 1 big partition on hdd. The partitions are all reiser except for hda1 which is ext2. In order to do this I've had to use the reiserfs dsl extension, which works fine on both 2.2 & 2.3 (currently useing dsl 2.3). I tried to load the live-cd of DSL-N with the same boot parameters I use on DSL but for some reason it does not see my dsl extension for reiser and as a result it will not start X or see the other extensions I've installed. What can I do to try to get this to work and/or what can I do to help others help me to trouble shoot this issue?

2) Is SATA support built-in to the current kernel used by DSL-N? I looked on the new site & saw nothing about this other than it mentions it is going to be available. I hesitate to try it on my current desktop though I may try to setup a fat32 partition and see if DSL-N will even access the partiton on a SATA drive...or would that not be a very valid test?

3) Why is it that on shutdown/reboot sometimes it will kick out the cdrom tray & other times not? Its an old HP8200 cdwriter that has no trouble burning cds' on DSL nor being spit out on reboot if I use the live-cd. Just a curiousity and maybe a bug I thought you'd wish to know about.

4) On an old Asus P2B motherboard, both DSL & -N find a pcmcia device and then run cardmngr. This is a desktop machine so what possible pcmcia device would it run? I have nothing of the sort in the bios or on the board itself. Ideas? Its not a problem per se but more of a curious thing I've wondered about for some time. AFAIK no other distro I've used finds a pcmcia device but I can check if need be by booting another live-cd.

As I said in the first few lines, I appreciate the effort & time that has gone into this new distro so I'm more than happy to test it (when time permits) so I may someday soon use it on my main machine. I don't know how else I can test it as yet but if theres any hints on this I'll take them.

It always kicks out the tray for me, but doesn't close it before it shuts down like DSL does. I'm having trouble mounting pendrives. They don't show up at all when I plug them in after boot. If I plug it in before boot I can see it in the terminal , but can't find it under /mnt in ElemFM

I had a terrible time downloading a2. It was very slow and kept freezing. I finally got it this morning at school and tried it when I got home.

I'm still having trouble with eboard. It downloads but refuses to run.

All of the built in apps seem to work fine.
