Try this.
Download the latest usb boot floppy image and make a new floppy.
Download and burn the latest livecd image file to CD-R
Verify that your USB drive is located at device named sda
Do a USB install from livecd. Do an INSTALL not an UPGRADE, but data on your USB drive will be lost unless you back it up somewhere else first.
