User Feedback :: X unusable
I have managed to configure X at the Dell Latitude XPi to get started, but it is unusable, no difference if using fbdev or vesa.
lspci tells that it is using a "Neomagic Corporation NM2070 [MagicGraph 128] rev 01....[size=2MB]"
It is a frugal install with DSL v2.0
The desktop has no background and is divided in small squares, watch it (for a period of time) at http://www.killerhippy.de/images/X.jpg (almost 1MB, didn't want to force the forum to load it). There is no text you can read at all.
I assume this is because of the small amount of Grafik memory (2MB) and that there is no way to get it working, right?

I have an old notebook using the Neomagic NM2160 and I must boot
fb800x600
Otherwise I get a similiar screen.
Note: There is no dsl in front of the fb800x600
dsl fb800x600 will not work.
ditto for my old notebook with Neomagic 128 card:
boot: fb800x600 (max. design resolution for it's 12.5" TFT) then
fbdev server selection
non-usb mouse selection
etc.
= very nice display every time.
Had great hopes that I had resolved my issues when I found this post.:) Unfortunately the fix did not work for me.. Apparently the framebuffer driver is not being loaded in the 3.01 standard release. At least the error message I get when X attempts to start is "modprobe: Can't locate module fb0" and I assume this is the issue. If anyone can point me in the correct direction all help is appreciated.
I had similar symptoms and error code on an old Compaq Presario 1230 with a 12.x" screen. "fb800x600" didn't help, but by trial and error I found that "dsl vga=787" or "=788", then selecting framebuffer in xsetup, no for USB mouse, then yes or Enter for everything else gave me the right display settings with DSL 3.0.1.
