User Feedback :: What files do I need to download first?
Sorry I am a Linux newbie. When I go to the download site, I've found many files and I did not know what to download first.
Thanks...
Depends on what you want, and how you will install. The 'current' directory is for the latest stable, and the 'release_candidate' directory is for the latest version in testing.
There are four types of DSL....
dsl-<version>.iso: the standard, which is used for liveCD, frugal, or traditional harddrive install.
dsl-<version>-syslinux.iso: boots using syslinux instead of isolinux, for some very old hardware that is no longer supported by isolinux. Use this if booting fails with the standard iso.
dsl-<version>-embedded.zip: comes with qemu, for running inside of a host windows or linux system.
dsl-<version>-vmx.zip: a virtual machine that will run in VMware or VMware player.
The *.sh files are shell scripts used for installing the standard or syslinux version on various types of removable media.
this is a an obvious problem which occurs often--but there is an easy fix.
If some one could put a text file on the server explaining things, that would help. even better would be to append something like "if_you_dont_know_download_this_file'" to the name of the isolinux iso.
Readme files are nice... even if its a copy/paste of what you just said, mikshaw
Sounds like a good idea to me.
