User Feedback :: why i love and hate dsl
i have had a revalation. linux is an exelent operating system.
i have had another revalation. only for experienced users!
i truly love dsl...buuuuuuuut, it wasnt always that way...
the love started when i found the dsl webpage and saw that it was 50 mb and would run on just about anything.......(still want to try to install in a speak and spell). and the love continued when i found out how easy it was to download and burn the iso...SUPER EASY!!!
the love even continued to the pentium 3 computer with a 6 gig hd....but then the "love" hit the fan....
i could boot the cd rom, but when it came time to install to the hd, it wouldnt work...after tooling around with the stupid machine for a while, i gave up....stupid linux couldnt find the hd....then i downloaded slackware linux, 3gb full install....not so happy about that, but hey. started the install process and supposedly finished it....ok, but then the computer wouldnt boot.......CRAP!!!
well...screw linux!!! going back to dos.......installed dos....wouldnt boot again!!!
dag fraggin snat prag..................................
all of a sudden...in the middle of the night....i woke up!!!
the hd of the computer was set as primary slave (got the computer from a lady for free when i sold her my other computer)....maybeeeeeeeee......
installed dsl successfuly!!!!!!!! yay!!!!!!!!!!! booted!!!!!!!!!! yay!!!!!!!!!!
now im back on the path to love......but.....................
setting up for the internet proved to be a little problem....wouldnt recognise my nic.....well go online for a linux nic driver.......YEA RIGHT!!!!!!!!! everything is compiled in c.....with no experience in c i decided to go and cry....
well, to make a looooong story shorter, i just rebooted my pc and it recognised my nic....WHOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!
the moral of the story-use dsl...but beware.......it will be confusing for a while...ESPECIALLY if you are used to dos...also, if you cant get something to work, just try restarting the computer....
thanks for reading my rant....also, kudos to you, makers of dsl....kudos
Why wouldnt it boot from CDROM?
Did it have a floppy available?
Brian
AwPhuch
the cd would boot and run, i just wanted to install to the hd...
the problem was that the hd was set to primary slave....linux didnt like that...
switched the hd to primary master and whamo!!!! it worked....
Love and hate, thats what i felt today. I was quite content with tinkering my own extensions (New Blender and Gaby addressbook from Puppy). I used some existing tar.gz as a template. I had lots of problems with registering the app to the menu due to file permission settings. They seem to change automagically whenever you copy parts of it. I tried forth and back and got it finally working.
The only thing left is that my extensions menu entry always overwrite the first entry. Apart from that i have to load another app first or it destroys half of the entire menu.
What could be the reason for it? It seems to be the file permissions but i don't see why.
Sorry, using 0.92 with kernel 2.4.26 (on dial-up).
Please help.
