User Feedback :: Dissapointed after 3 weeks of DSL
linuxlizard, your experience is not the norm. Just look at this thread.

I find your claims hard to believe..I did a three week crash course in linux on a dx2-66mhz with 48meg ram and found dsl the best in its class..deli is available as beta if you want anything close..I had a few freeze issues due to hardware but dsl offered all the basics on this machine..calc, notepad, word processor with spellcheck calendar/pim, viewer, popmail, basic browser, gammon, tetris and several basic games, cd player with alarm..most of all it is available free and is mine with very few restrictions..why play a shootergame on a windows box when you can spend the time creating your own operating system..what a youngster learns on this little jem goes a long way to this end..show them how to build a unit from parts and install options..hd installs work best on old equipment especially when adding several extensions..teach them the limitations and how to get the best out of what they have..on a pent166 you can improve internet use and check webmail and play mp3 files and rip cd's..create a libery of pfd books..hundreds of classics are available free from planet pdf..and young people should be encouraged to read them...your is a nobel idea and needs more consideration for what children actually need not what they want.. let them take it where they want..use the 486 boxes for building and learning and the pent units for building and taking home..something to be proud of building themselves and free includeing the os..have a fast machine as an example of what can be done..dsl is a perfect example of creativity and personal desire..win95/98 can not offer this flexibility. if they keep the system they can use it later to put on a thumb drive on a faster unit..think what it can do not what it cannot...let them install basic linux and see the contrast...take a break and reinstall..I installed about 75 times or more in three weeks..big deal..live and learn
I know that dsl can do anything that any other distro can, as long as you are willing to learn and put in the effort. I have used it where noting else would work at all. Kudo's to the developers.
Smooth Flights...
Please don't interpret this as attacks, but:
Maybe your problem is with a specific extension or a specific combination of extensions that cause lockups. Or maybe you fill up your ramdisk (not your available RAM, but your ramdisk size) with too many extensions?
Have you attempted to isolate the problem and find the culprit or culprits?
The MyDSL extensions are user-contributed and are not directly supported by the developers, so it may be possible that one of them is causing you problems that were not anticipated by the user who built it.
FYI, if you want a non-DSL nice traditional hard drive installed distro that doesn't hog your computer's resources but also lets you use the Debian Package manager to install new programs, try this out:
Find and download a copy of the KNOPPIX 3.4 livecd called KNOPPIX_V3.4-2004-05-17-EN.iso
http://mirror.etf.bg.ac.yu/distributions/knoppix/
and boot with this command:
knoppix desktop=fluxbox
and then do a hard drive installation.
It won't have what DSL offers, but it is a fairly low-resource but trouble-free way to get Linux on to an older computer system.
I think maybe you should get more samples of old hardware
and do more tests. If it's ubuntu that does it for you, then stick with it. The faster we can get kids on linux, the better.
Even though I hate 'traditional' linux, it is only through it's experience that I can compare and appreciate dsl. Kids can learn a lot from this. Welcome to linux kids, 'No Pain - No Gain'.
