User Feedback :: Basic Boot Problem
I've a very basic boot problem I've never seen from DSL before. I've just put together a VIA EPIA 5000 motherboard for a basic DSL system.
On booting from CD, I get the following message:
ISOLINUX 2.04 (Debian, 2003-06-06) isolinux: Loading spec packet failed, trying to wing it...
isolinux: Extremely broken BIOS detected, last ditch attempt with drive = 9F
isolinux: Disk error 01, AX = 424C, drive 9F
Boot failed: press a key to retry...
Never even get to the first DSL display to select boot options. I get the same with both DSL 2.3 and DSL 2.1b; both discs boot up no problem on another machine. Knoppix 4.0 CD boots up fine with no problems. Did a DSL 2.3 USB ZIP install on another machine & it boots up fine on the VIA from USB.
So I think all the hardware is working, DSL just won't boot from CD on the VIA machine. Probably some stupid setting in the BIOS I haven't figured out.
Anyone experienced anything similar or have some ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Ian.

Ian - I can not help solve your problem but I have the same board and I was able to boot from a CD drive and install DSL onto a CF card. The CD drive I used was older, a 40x read only CD. The CF card was installed on IDE-1 and the CD drive on IDE-2.
Maybe the DSL-syslinux version or the DSL USB version will work?
Hi Chagger,
Yes - downloaded the syslinux version & boots perfectly - writing this on it.
Many thanks!
In simple terms - what's the difference?
Best regards,
Ian.
SYSLINUX is a Linux bootloader originally intended for floppy disk booting, but it can also be used for CD disk booting with certain limitations in the size of the boot files.
ISOLINUX is a Linux bootloader that was designed from the ground up for CD disk booting purposes.
On some computers or CDROM drives, SYSLINUX will work even though ISOLINUX will not.
For most newer computers and drives ISOLINUX works fine.
