User Feedback :: fb800x600

You should just need to replace the vga=791 item with vga=788 on the first APPEND line in the cfg file. That will make the default boot 800x600.

If you have the KNOPPIX file on a hard drive, why not just install LILO or GRUB & boot using that instead of a CD or floppy. That way you can tailor the startup parameters to whatever you want. See the WIKI for more info on how to go about this if you're not sure.

I would love to do that, BUT . . . .

The old laptop that I am dealing with is running Win95 quite well.  If I read the wiki instructions correctly, I would have to reformat (lose all files & data) on the one and only hard disk to make a lilo or grub dual booting machine. . . as well as reinstall Win95.

My current method of using the machine with either Windows or DSL has only the disadvantage of slower boot into DSL (cause floppy is involved in booting) AND the requirement of typing in the fb800x600 command at boot time.

I tried your welcome suggestion, but it didn't do a thing!

I am going to go take a peek at the syslinux.cfg file and make sure the edit "took".   Yeah, here's what's on the floppy in the area of that first append line:
LABEL dsl
KERNEL linux24
APPEND ramdisk_size=100000 init=/etc/init lang=us apm=power-off vga=788 initrd=  and so forth
.................
Well, I knew there was nothing wrong with my edit, but I wanted to look.
Any more suggestions?
As an experiment why don't I change the language specified in that line and see if the display lang. changes?   Gotta try something.

Okay, Andrew, you are right. It works.   I was making an error.   I wasn't changing the correct Append line.

How could I make such a mistake, well, I'll tell you.  I was doing the editing on my fast Windows machine and it was slamming the text to be edited on the screen with the top six lines scrolled OFF the top of the screen.  So I was selecting the top Append line, but it wasn't the top Append line.
:p

Thanks much for teaching me how to edit that damn file . . . and I don't think it is at all obvious.
