Sounds like a screen resolution problem when trying to start X.
What is the native resolution for your video display device.
Can you boot to runlevel 2

boot: dsl 2

or

boot: dsl xsetup

Try different resolutions

A digression sorry, but for future ref:

By vfat I mean fat16

My understanding is that vfat isn't fat16.  It's closer to fat32 but it isn't that either.  It's its own beast.

My installation stops here, too.  I am pretty sure it is a case of X failing to start.  My laptop is a toshiba R100 with the trident cyberblade xp3 (i think) graphics chip, which doesn't play nice with xorg.  I have had ubuntu 6.10 running on this machine - with X issues - but no joy with DSL.  I have tried loads of boot and installation methods, with various boot options, but I still get the freeze.  Any suggestions yet?  I would have for this lovely laptop to be windows only. :-(
a long shot, but you could try curaga's tinyx

http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....t=18205

it has a different vesa server (amongst others).

I'd say Xtrident...
