User Feedback :: Damn impressed!

Just burnt the DSL ISO and must admit that I am very impressed!!
Tomorrow I am going to do a hard drive install I like it that much.

I also want to make a live CD to help repair both linux and windows boxes, I understand that you can install programs you want and then burn a live CD that has them on.

What I will need is a decent antivirus (f-prot?) and a file manager that can read and write to NTFS partitions.

Any suggestions?

Also if anybody can point me to a walk through of what I want to do it would be appreciated.

I have used many OSs over the years but I think with DSL I may have found a home!

May I be so bold as to suggest NOT performing a hard drive install ?

Instead, consider running the Live CD toram (if you have enuf, 128Mb suggested) or a frugal install, which is virtualy bulletproof. The hard drive install can become tweaked in the wrong manner just like any other hard drive install. However, Live or Frugal will not. A reboot will fix anything I manage to screw up whilst playing around with things I have no knowledge of.

I suggest reading the Wiki and searching the forums, and reading the PDF documents/walkthru's that Clivesay has contributed. These things will change the way you think about your personal computing. Seriously.

I second green's idea. I would recommend a frugal install over a hd install. I believe that most people that have tried both would do the same. It makes it a breeze to use the mydsl extensions since you can simply reboot to uninstall it. Also as was previously stated with the compressed image on one partition and another partition with your mydsl, home & opt, it really protects you against yourself if you tweak something you shouldnt have. Your call, just my humble opinion.
Thanks Guys

I take on board what you say about a frugal install and will give it a go.

Any suggestions for antivirus and file manager (incl NTFS) programs? I cannot see any with .dsl extentions.

At the moment I have a dual boot with xandros & winXP, will a frugal install be added to the xandros Lilo?

a file manager can't control what filesystem types are writeable.  There is nothing yet in DSL or the myDSL packages (that i know of) which will allow writing to NTFS.  You might be better off finding a distro which is built specifically for rescue, and use DSL for more typical computing needs.
