I have spend hours with the same problem, now it works.
First: dsl nohwsetup, the system comes up the first time!
2nd: kill X, sudo su, hwsetup -v, then i saw that the last modprobe before dead was the btt878 driver -> my brandnew twinhan dvb-s card!
3rd: card removed, boot up, dsl comes up without problems, yes!

Now i know the reason for the same hang on similar systems like knoppix rescue systems from certain developers like pc-welt (germany)

To keep the card plugged the dsl has to be patched, or, better, the next version 'know' the twinhan card.

Hmm...

Can you boot up in "expert" mode?

IMHO the 'expert' mode doesn't ask for disable the hwsetup, so the systems freezes like before.
As i afore said, the only way to successfull boot was the 'nohwsetup' switch.
