User Feedback :: Boot up time on DSL...

Hi,

I was wondering about how DSL boots compared to Debian. I know on Debian stable/Sarge, it takes a LONG time to boot even a semifast computer. I guess that this is due to the auto detection that they are now using. It seems if I remember right, the last Debian version was a lot faster to boot as you just put in the modules you wanted to boot in an init script somewhere in /etc

Does DSL use the same method as Sarge?

Can anyone tell me if they know how to change Sarge to boot faster? I was thinking maybe a good idea would be to do an HD install of DSL if they have a faster boot method.

I can't imagine have long the current Debian would take on a slow computer. Eck! I do know that Puppy boot very very fast on my PII -300 laptop.

I managed to get DSL booting in 25 seconds on my K6-III 400mhz by recompiling the kerneland using nohwsetup in append section. You can do the same on Sarge

I ran DSL linux from the cd on a P-III 550 MMX HP BRIO.
It was just too slow for XP, putting Xp on it was a disaster, but DSL waws great.
It was even faster when I added a 256 meg Linux swap file in the HD. (I use Partition Magic 8 to do this).
eventually I tried to install UBABTU to disk and had trouble with this, so I deleted it and installed SuSe 9.3 pro and it was excellent.
At least DSL showed me that the PC would run Linux, I did wonder as the video uses ram rather than a proper video card.
