X and Fluxbox :: automatically boot in X
I did a hd-install of Damn Small Linux. My runlevel in inittab is 4, but when the computer boots, I first need to login and then run startx. How come there is no X login screen?
An X login screen is provided by applications such as xdm, gdm, or kdm, none of which is in DSL. You can avoid the need to type "startx" by adding "startx" to $HOME/.bash_profile. This will mean that you have a text login screen, but as soon as you login X will be started automatically. This also means that if you log in on another virtual terminal, startx will run again (or at least attempt to run).
Aah, I see. Since I've done a hd-install, would it be possible to install one of these applications using apt-get? Or is there a high chance of breaking the system?
And since I'm asking questions anyway: I've made an extra user, besides the dsl user. Should the 'upgrade GNU utilities' and 'enable apt' be run for every user?
No, those are installed (to /usr/bin, etc.), so they're there for every user.
But when you log in as user 'dsl', you log in into X automatically?
