X and Fluxbox :: better fonts in Xvesa?

This thread talk about getting truetype fonts
going for KDrive (aka Xvesa, aka Xfbdev)..

Anyone made progress with this?

I'm not sure I can run XFree86 given XVesa gave me
green screen until I switched to Xfbdev (frame buffer).
XFree86 might be too slow as well.

My system is
Pentium MMX 233MHz
48MB RAM
6GB HD
booting frugal install on HD
from grub with fb1024x768
