X and Fluxbox :: Help, no 1280x1024 on VIA EPIA M10000

I am a DSL n00b, but learning as fast as I can. The most "annoying" problem right now is that I can't seem to get 1280x1024 resolution working on my VIA EPIA M10000 system.

I am using a 17" LCD which has a native resolution of 1280x1024, but DSL seems to default to 1024x768. When I crank up the resolution (with XVESA using the little GUI application of different resolution buttons) the monitor stays at 1024x768 but the desktop seems to get larger as I can no longer see the system stats, pager, etc, anything that was on the bottom or right edges of the screen seems to dissapear.

For what it's worth, I use 1280x1024x24 on Debian Sarge with this same system and the generic vesa xfree86 drivers.

The Xvesa GUI simply captures the output of the command

Xvesa -listmodes

Which is the list of video modes supported by the TinyK Xvesa server in DSL

If the server claims it can do 1280x1024, why doesn't it actually work? Is there a different, more proper step for enabling 1280x1024 on a VIA EPIA M system?
is there any reason you can't use XFree86 in DSL too?
I think the solution might be to use X.org and the OpenChome drivers to make the most of my VIA EPIA M and its onboard graphics. I could even get OpenGL working that way. Might be a really nutty challenge getting all of that to fit in a small flash drive, but worthwhile if it could be pulled off.
