X and Fluxbox :: Need some assitance using the "Terminal"



Just to start off, I want to notify everyone I have never used Linux before. Ok, I made my Live CD, booted DSL... and looked around a little bit. I installed Flash and Firebird using the menu (Apps... Net... got the bandwith?). And looked around a little bit more. Then, I got interested in installing AIM. I apoligize if this is the wrong forum, but as far as I know Fluxbox is a terminal. Here's the instructions from installing AIM. I have no idea how to log in as root, don't know how the "cd /" command is typed, and have a couple of other questions. My overall goal is just to get AIM running. Oh,. and another question. Do all of my downloads get saved to my C:\ drive? Or do they get written to the disk? Do they just get deleted?

DSL comes with an AIM client called nAIM. It's in your menu. Fluxbox isn't a terminal, it's a window manager. You don't need to -- and shouldn't -- log in as root. Most of the rest of your questions are answered in the document that opens in dillo browser when you start DSL. It explains how to save any settings you want to keep, etc.
The instructions state the following:

"Installation Instructions for TGZ (all other OS)

1. Log in as root

2. cd /

3. Download AIM onto your system

4. On the command line, type gunzip command as shown in the example: gunzip -c -aim1.5.286.tgz | tar xvf-, where 1.5.286 represents the AIM version and release numbers.

5. To run AIM, login as a regular user and type "/usr/loca/bin/aim" on the command line.

Almost all of that is confusing to me, and the version is 1.5.286

I opened nAIM and when I type /connect myscreenname it prompts me for my password, and I enter it. After that, it still displays I am offline and doesn't seem to do anything. Should I incase my screen-name in quotes when I type it following /connect? What did I do wrong?
