X and Fluxbox :: Can't start display

I have installed dsl on my HD and all seemed to go fine, but it refuses to start X, leaving me at the command prompt, which I am getting very good at using!  I have a feelling that it has something to do with my hardware.
Some time ago the integrated graphic chip (sis 5579) packed in and I put a pci Matrox Millennium II card in to replace it an all seems to be fine.  I feel that Linux is detecting the old chip still and setting up to support that one instead of the pc card.   How do I resolve this and get the kernel to ignore the integrated chip?  In Winblows it is simply a case of disabling it in the hardware properties and does not cause much heart ache!
Any advice would be great, but remember that I am quite new to the Linux way of life.

Is there any way to disable the integrated graphics in the bios? You could also check the following pages to see if you can pass an option to Xvesa to fix the problem:

Hi thanks for links.  There is nothing in the bios that would help.  This is the actual error message that I get after log in "XI0:fatal IO error 104 (connection reset to peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events running" this makes no sense to me at all and would love to solve this problem.  Any help would be great

compaqjohn ..
1. When you ran the HDInstall from LiveCD, was it able to startup an X session ?

2. If not, can you add exclusions to your bootup string to make it work?
Will those same exclusions work in your lilo conf. for your HDInstall ?

The tips on XVesa are great, tnx..
I wonder if the -force or -swaprgb options could help some of
our users who have "color troubles" ?

1. No, after the Hd install I couldn.t start X, and I couldn't start X when I ran it from memory with a boot disk.

2. I can add strings in the lilo box and they work.  The only changes to the lilo.conf that I have made is to add "noapm" as I was having a bit of a problem booting orginally and this has fixed that problem.

I'm just wondering if it is possible to download the complete and full version of X11R6 and install it? Has dsl got enough grunt for this?  If I could this would rule out the possibility of have some bad files in the system.

Thanks john
