X and Fluxbox :: Nvidia Geforce hangs when starting X

Hi,
I have an Nvidia GeForce 5200 card, which doesn't like fb too much, and makes the fb window small and purple looking.

So the workaround was to start with bootoption vga=normal

That was fine until I tried to startx.

It just hangs and I have to reboot. I tried the xsetup utility and tried both options Xvesa and the fb option.

How can I make DSL start X with good ol' svga X Xfree/Xorg server? Or should I somehow include the nv modules from Xfree?

Oh yeah and the x server hangs regardless of the vga boot option.

thanks

DaveUSB,

I have an nvidia 5200, here's what i do:

At boot (liveCD), what makes the video work for me is this:

fb1024x768

Even though that works just fine, i like this better:

Go get XFree86.dsl  AND  nvidia.dsl from the repository.

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub....testing

FIRST: Read the 'info' associated with those two .dsl's. Info is located to the right of where you download the .dsl's next to the file name. You have to read those in order to get the extensions to work. Don't worry, it's easy, just follow the directions exactly and use the nvidia accelerated Config. You'll know what I'm talking about when you read the 'info's. When you get that working, you should see the Nvidia logo appear when x starts up. If you have issues, post what you did in detail as well as what it's doing, also post how you are running DSL, i.e.: hd install, usb, frugal, liveCD, etc. These things help and make a difference.

Good luck.

EDIT: If you find yourself with a blank screen you can do this to get a command prompt:

alt+F1
or
alt+F2

Then you can make adjustments or

sudo shutdown -r now

to reboot.

alright, I booted like this:

dsl fb1024x768 xsetup

then on the xsetup chose the framebuffer option and it worked without locking up!.

I didn't try Xfree and stuff, because I already use Gentoo in this computer, and I use DSL for work and rescue.

thanks for your help!

Glad it works for you!
it's possible in an hd installed dsl version to add the fb code?
And if yes, what file may I have to edit?

Thanks
