X and Fluxbox :: Screen refresh rate

Hi!

I'm new to DSL, so I have some questions. The most important is this  one: how to change screen refresh rate? It seems, that now it's ~60Hz.

I know, that my nvidia geforce3 w/128Mb can do better than that. By the way - lovering the resolution didn't change a thing.

The Knoppix cheatcode to change the refresh rate is:
vsync=60
(for 60) I have not tried it with DSL, but it might work, does for the base Knoppix distro.
In the DSL 1.1 menu, there is a screen resolution panel, allowing an on-the-fly
change to another resolution and screen size:
Menu -> System -> Xvesa.
There you can choose a different color depth, and screen size.
What ever you stick with, will be automatically saved when you shutdown if you have the
home/dsl/.xserverrc file in your filetool.lst, and have selected a place for your
settings to be saved, preferably a hard drive partition. I use my hda1, the Windows
98 partition, and the settings are picked up automatically by DSL on bootup.
That feature is very high-tech, as most live CD distros make you jump through hoops to get your personal settings restored. The ease-of-daily-use index with DSL is right at the top with the automatic restore feature, beats Windows XP hands down and most of the Live CD distros such as SuSE Live Eval, and PCLinuxOS.
Here is my filetool.lst that I use with DSL 1.1:
Code Sample
opt/bootlocal.sh
opt/powerdown.sh
home/dsl/filetool.lst
home/dsl/.fluxbox/backgrounds
home/dsl/.fluxbox/styles
home/dsl/.fluxbox/styles/Rapidweather
home/dsl/.fluxbox/backgrounds/arches.jpg
home/dsl/.fluxbox/menu
home/dsl/.fluxbox/init
home/dsl/.xinitrc
home/dsl/.xserverrc
home/dsl/.mozilla
home/dsl/html
home/dsl/wvdial
etc/wvdial.conf

I have added a custom Fluxbox style, and a wallpaper. Custom Fluxbox menu and init. My .xinitrc leaves out Dillo on bootup. Also, I have some
built-in web pages that are saved, as well as wvdial, which I just stuck in there
from a floppy. My restored DSL, then, is ready to dial up right away upon bootup.
:D

DSL uses the vesa TinyX Kdrive Xserver instead of the bigger XFree86 Xserver.

The VESA 2.0 specification does not allow for adjusting the refresh rate, so we are stuck at 60Hz.

However, you can try a couple alternatives:

1) See if you can boot up with a Nvidia frame buffer with a custom refresh rate and then choose the xfbdev server.

2) Figure out how to install the XFree86.dsl extension package.  There is also a Nvidia.dsl package that can be used to enable 3D accelerations for Nvidia graphics cards.

Search the forums for keywords like

XFree86

or

NVidia

or search the DSL documentation site for more info.  Also, read the xfree86.dsl and nvidia.dsl info files at the mydsl page for more info.

Good Luck.

If your monitor refreshes at 60Hz, do not use fluorescent lamps in your room.  Use incandescent lamps or, better yet, a candlestick.  Aromatheraphy candles will work too.  A bit more nerdy solution will be to use those white LED lamps connected to a regulated AC-to-DC power supplies.

Love this! A smell-good solution ...
