X and Fluxbox :: Blank screen :(

Hi,

I am a newb, so excuse the obvious. I have in the past played with the live version of DSL - excellent fast little distro, would love to learn linux in more detail [if I had the time!!]

Anyway, away from home at the moment and my computer is a p3-800/256Gb/80gb [my new toy :)]/cd-rom [no burner]/2x usb etc

I followed the instruction from another post

http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....4;st=10

[I hope that is correct] and got it working [seemingly] as it detects the kernel and auto-configures devices etc. then it goes to the screen choosing options, I have tried both xvesa [?] and fb. I have tried 640x480x4 through to 1023x768x32 [15 permutations]

They all result in black screen with no activity. I can always ctrl-alt-1 out and type the .sh to choose another setup and then startx. when i do this, i get 2 types of errors. this is the main one:

Using Xvesa default 1024x768x32 - mouse "/dev/psaux", 5 mouse
Xauth: creting new authority file /home/dsl/.Xauthority
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining

Sometimes [depending on which resolution I use] I also get errors with the following in the lines [sorry didnt write down the whole line]

(erno 111)
(erno 3)

I managed to get a poor mans install of Knoppix, so I know it can be done on this machine, but I know nowhere enough linux to get it going

Please help. Thanks in anticipation

Raj

i get the same problem when i use/ loadlin to boot the "KNOPPIX" file. (on a dell latitude laptop (w/neomagic video chip))

this is not unique to 1.03.

help?

Might want to try booting with "fb1024x768" or "fb800x600" - I know you said you tried fb, but was that from xsetup, or from boot commands?  I think sometimes it doesn't work through xsetup?
Dunno, I just know that I had similar problems with my machine, thought I tried every setting under xsetup, but then when I tried booting with "fb1024x768" it worked fine.  For some reason xvesa no longer wants to work with a lot of new hardware?

Just another case here.  Loadlin install on a Compaq presario 1245 will work provided the boot option "vga=788" or "fb800x600" is used AND Xfbdev server is selected at xsetup dialog.
