1. got your XF86config to work but my mouse was all over the place. I am using DSL 1.0 . I have a toshiba terca 8000 laptop and i am using a usb mouse. I hope this info helps. I got the XF86- Vesa to work

2. can I apt-get "testing" or should i stick to "oldStable" ?

Sure, you can use testing if you want. Just comment out the second line in /etc/apt/sources.list and uncomment the first.
