Other Help Topics :: hd Install to ram ?
Here is one for the community,
How would one go about getting DSL to do an install to a ram disk instead of a hard drive. I am not talking about running "toram" as DSL is currently set up to do. Actually do a hd install to a ramdisk.
PC's have a tonne of ram now days, heck I have a gig on my pc.
This would actually be a solution for an earlier post of mine.

But it would only last as long as you have power; how about electric cuts?
Even the best UPS cannot hold too long..
I think he was implying that the install would occur with every boot, which would be no more at risk than a regular toram system in the event of a power outage.
I thought for a minute that it could be as simple as extending /etc/init.d/mkwriteable to copy rather than link, and then unmounting KNOPPIX but I'm not certain.
You might consider looking at that script, dsl-config & knoppix-autoconfig, and maybe the harddrive install scripts.
Thanks mikshaw,
I was just going around in circles, chasing my own tail as I tend to do sometimes. Brain works faster than reason...lol I was thinking I was going to have to hack and slash DSL, in the back of my mind I know there is a simpler solution without re-writing a lot of scripts.
I will give that a look into, sounds easier than what I had in mind. :-)

sounds cool. let us know if it works!
i had a thought like that in the past. i was thinking that if i could create a ramdisk
in dos, maybe i could copy the knoppix image on it and boot using that. never tried
it though.
perhaps you could just do the copy after boot, unmount knoppix, and re-mount to ramdisk?
