Yes you could install KDE but it would be easier just to install knoppix.

Theres a cut down (250mb) version of knoppix which would save you a lot of grief

Should be somewhere on the knoppix site under mini-knoppix.

thanks i did that a look at knoppix.net but thought it was to big - but now will happily take another look , is it easy to uninstall dsl, just delete the partition and create it again?! seems the easiest method for a noob like me
