Other Help Topics :: [Windower] Stupid Question ???
Hi All !
Today, was my first installation of DSL next to Win98
(works great).
My questions is: Is it possible to install Mozilla, FireFox, PHP, MySQL, Apache onto DSl
Can you give me some example how to install i.e. Mozilla (if it's possible) onto DSL with apt-get and Inet connection

Thanks in advice
Yes, indeed. And it is easy (not a 1-click process, but it is easy).
First, you need to make a full and complete installation of DSL on your hard drive. This is very important. You will need then to restore the dpkg structure, so you need a fast internet connection. Then, either you download the apps from their correspondent sites, or you install them using apt-get. In the last case, you will need to upgrade the sites from when dpkg and apt will download the packages. You can do that with dselect, selecting the unstable distribution. Stable normally provides rock-solid packages, but they are older too.
You will need to search in the forums and the damnsmalllinux.org homepage for the tutorials and complete instructions.
Good luck: you will need it.
DSL is based on Knoppix which is, in turn, based on Debian. Debian manages system updates through an easy to use updating system, Apt. Apt is console-based, but for the squeamish, I wrote a fairly easy to understand walkthrough explaining apt as it relates to DSL...
Damn Small Apt Walkthrough, Using Apt with Damn Small Linux (It may be a little outdated with the release of DSL 0.7)
Cbagger suggests the use of Synaptic, a point-n-click graphical front-end for apt. A lot of users new to Linux prefer the GUI to the console. (I'm a command-line dinosaur, guess which way I lean.) It's a solid app and will let you install software without having to learn the handful of commands required to use apt at the console.
cbagger's Synaptic install script (recommended)
Look around the forums/website for information on .dsl packages. There are packages for the GNUtils, Abiword, OpenOffice.org, etc. They're primarily directed for use in creating myDSL liveCD's but they should work for hdinstall users(?/!)
Thanx for replies. Today, my DSL was reinstalled on HDD (just for fun), then dpkg-restore was installed. next things will be tested after breakfast

Greetings !
