Other Help Topics :: basic help with cd

Hi all,

I know this has been covered before but perhaps I am having a slightly different problem.  I have downloaded the latest .iso of DSL and have tried to burn it to a CD in a number of ways.  Primarily, I used Nero on an XP box to burn the image to a disk.  When that didn't work I started fooling around with variations of it such as putting the contents of the Knoppix folder in the root directory of the CD, etc.  Unfortunately, no matter how I burned it, my computer just zooms right by it and starts up the OS on the hd.  To make sure that I wasn't being completely stupid, I downloaded the latest Knoppix and burned a CD of it in the same way I did for DSL.  My computer picked it right up and booted in Knoppix - I am posting this from inside Knoppix actually.

Any ideas on what might be going on would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

mark

Did you do a md5sum on the iso?

Brian,

I hadn't thought of that (doh) but I went and checked and it reported back that it was OK.  Thanks for the suggestion though.  I will have more time to futz with it this weekend, perhaps I will figure it out then.

Thanks,

Mark

Your computer may have a problem with syslinux.

Do you get a brief flash about "syslinux" at the top of your screen before the computer decides to load up your hard disk-based OS?

If so, you could try creating a boot floppy.  Otherwise, you may need to wait until DSL version 0.8.0 comes out.

Thanks for the help guys.  It appears to be working now.  I didn't do anything differently than with the first time I burned it.  Originally, I only burned it 1 time the "right" way and then I started to fool around with moving stuff around.  This weekend, I tried to do it again, "just in case".  Low and behold it works fine.  Maybe there was something wrong with the CD or just a general error in writing the disk, I dont know.  But, the bottom line is that it is working.  Thanks for the suggestions!!!

Now, on to installing it to the hard drive.  :)
