Printers :: Brother HL-5040
I am trying to get a Brother HL-5040 running on a DSL machine.
It says its PCL-6 compliant, but only PCL-3 appears on the setup. (it wont let me install sing these i've tried)
Also, Brother relesed a few linux drivers (see: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/lpr_drivers.html ) but don't really know what to do with the files.
I have the printer able to be connected using USB or LPT (or both...) arethe correct addresses /dev/usb/lp0 (usb) and /dev/lp0 (lpt) under DSL?
Any help is usefull, thanks heaps
This site was helpful to me.

Here is the page for your printer.

I see there are some other brother drivers listed under apsfilter option 3 & 4 , (which were the only ones that had drivers included that worked for me (hpoj350) the best was the ghostscript (3)). Have you tried any of them to see if you get something ? I don't know about installing outside drivers, etc in DSL either, yet (1 week into it) . sorry
I was browsing the forum and somebody suggested using a HP lazerjet 4 driver, and it works. But very poorly
the first line on a page is set to be printed off the printable range for some reason. Also the colour emulation (being a b&w printer) is VERY poor, images look fantastically bad. I also think a few other problems are going on aswell.
Not to say i'm not happy with it working period, I probably would prefer using the correct drivers or a more compatable PCL-6 driver (lazerjet is PCL-4 i think). So the linuxprinting.org drivers would be ideal if i had any idea how in the hell to install them.
If anyone else has ideas i'll be happy to hear them, thanks for your input Howard L
hmm, i use the hl-5050, and i also need to know where to place the .ppd files; someone sugested in ..../apsfilter
Sounds promising, I'll give it a go when I have time. Will this then automatically be in the printer setup menu though? or will it install to DSL without any "custom settings"?
I suppose i'll find out...
