Apps :: Upgrading Firefox

i have a hard drive install of 1.2 and need to upgrade firefox. where is the directory where the built in firefox is located, because i think i have a way to update firefox there.
The last time i looked it was in /usr/local/firefox.  It can be installed anywhere you want, though, since firefox keeps its files together in one directory and your personal configs should work for any version.
I thought that too, but when I extract the .tar.gz and try to run Firefox, I get a shared library:filenot found error...  *shrug*  I am a new old Linux user (ie it's been a few too many years since I have played around with Linux, and I am almost a complete n00b again!  LOL)
firefox 1.5 as per the download site, requires gtk2.
You may need to load the gtk2 extension to meet this requirement.
