Someone else had the same problem, Google isn't sending the smtp "okay" message. It's their bug, so you can only email google about it..Note to curaga: My reading of the two trouble reports is that they are describing different problems. The other one you mention is saying the mail is sent, abnorm999 is saying Sylpheed times out trying to send the message. The other one appears to be a known issue with the google mail server not sending an appropriate answer to the quit command after it has sent the mail.
Abnorm999, I mean you no disrespect but when I hear (read in this case) someone say "ive tried playing with the settings and that usually just gets me some sort of error message", the first thing I think to do is check over all the options again to make sure nothing is left from "playing".
You didn't report your options in the order as they appear on the tabs but you don't need to worry about the pop3 stuff since you're receiving OK, so first I would check the send tab and make sure that authorization is set for automatic, that the username includes the @gmail.com part and the password is correct.
If that is okay, and you still time out, next I would try changing the SMTP port to 587 instead of 465.
Only change one thing at a time and show us the exact error message you receive with that change. "Some sort of error message" doesn't help either you or us figure this out.abnorm, do you know if your recipients are receiving mail despite the warnings? Have you tried sending yourself a test message (either to the same account or to another one)?.sorry about being so vague...writing and speech are not one of my strong points i figured it out you have to go to the "advanced" tap and uncheck "specify SMPT port (i tried changing numbers but that didnt work) and set POP3 port 995. just what exactly is a port anyways?
