And then I installed flash from source (after installing GCC and proper libraries).

When did Adobe release Flash source code?

My bad.  You are correct, I meant to say installed the binary available via adobe's website.  I make the mistake of immediately associating anything not in a package with "source".  And it has been a long time since I set it up. But anyhow, it is still working for me with the combination of DSL 3.0.1, FF 2.0.0.3, and Flash 9.  Can't remember doing anything special.

Oh, I do have the flashblock add-on installed, so I only run the flash I want, but I commonly watch youtube and google videos with it.

Well, I just tried it  with FF 2.0.0.14 and it crashed. (DSL 4.X, gtk2).
