Apps :: usr/bin/dpkg error code 1

Good morning all,
When trying to use synaptic to install make i get the following error usr/bin/dpkg error code 1 Im pretty new to linux so please be gentle with me LOL.

Did you download dsl-dpkg.dsl from the repository?

Well in synaptic if that is what you mean by repository it says dpkg is installed

i also tried installing it from mydsl still get error code 1 when trying to install make
