Apps :: XSINE Installation
Hi all, i am just starting to use DSL and i wanted to install XSINE onto my hard drive. DSL is already installed and i have the tarball on disk, only problem is i have no idea what i am doing and cant work out how to install any new programs into DSL .
If someone could help me with step by step instructions on how to install it i would be very grateful.
Thank you very much
Skyboy,
I can't immediately find an application called Xsine.
Did you mean Xine, the movie player?
If so, there is a .dsl extension for this package in the repository,
which you can obtain in several ways, and the installation of
.dsl extensions is covered at this documentation page.
If not, then it was just a thought.
Compiling and installing a tarball in a minimised distro such as this,
is not a trivial task. You might want to search the forums on this,
and check the whole
Docs section.
Yes i did mean xine, will try to use the methods on the docs and see if it works. I have been using windows since i got onto a pc and decided to give DSL a try on my p166 so i hope it works
Thanks for your help
OK no longer a noob, took me a while but i got the hang of it, I have moved away from DSL as a HD-Install operating system and switched to Puppy Linux, although i still carry a copy of DSL in my wallet wherever i go. Even though the installation of most major apps are faily easily integrated into the OS for customization i still find issues sometime trying to install raw programs (tar usually) and integrating it into a live system but usually when running llive the base apps are fairly comprehensive when initiating more comon tasks.
On the other hand while using puppy i find the installation a little more simple with many 'dotpups' available from various sources. Because of my volunteer role as an I.T. tutor, I find the process a lot easier to explain to other linux noobs the processes with puppy, rather than DSL.
Are there any major sites where it is possible to find a range of .dsl files or are they scattered around different sites like dotpups as i have only found a mere few sites with apps not suited to the needs of myself and others i teach and associate with.
Any help on an address where i can find an extensive .dsl listing would be greatly appreciated.
