Apps :: A mishmash of questions...

Hello folks. :)

I'm running DSL with a frugal install from my HD.  I've browsed around this forum and taken a look at the wiki, but there are still some things I'm not entirely clear on.

One, using Emelfm, where's my home directory?  During the setup, I used the "/home=hda3 and /opt=hda3" argument.  But, when I look in Emelfm, it says /ramdisk/home.  Also, I can't seem to MkDir in home.  Nor can I save something using FLwriter.  What am I doing wrong?

Two, in the wiki it says to add extensions using myDSL, you just click on the app and then click "get it!"  But, I don't see a "get it!" button...only a download button.  Is that the same?  Also, when I click download it asks where to save, giving my /tmp as a default saving directory.  Is it OK to save there?  If I do save there, will I be able to use it (abiword, for example)?

Three, what app do I need in order to run a web-server using DSL?

That's about it for now.  Sorry these questions are so noobish, but DSL has thrown me for a loop.  I thought I was getting used to Linux, but DSL is making me realize that I know nothing about Linux!  ???

Thanks for your help.

Edit:  Forgot to add that I'm using the 2.0RC of DSL.

Hi,

1 - I think you should use opt=hda3 and home=hda3 (loose the "/").  Your home dir is /home/dsl (or in your case a link to /ramdisk/home/dsl)
If you try to mkdir a directory in /home this will not work. At least as user dsl. You do not have permission to write in /home. You do have permission to write in /home/dsl.

2 - yes use "download". /tmp could be used. But after a reboot the file is gone. /tmp is also on the ramdisk with a frugal install. Probably /mnt/hda3 is a good place to put the files. (At least if it is mounted. If you use home=hda3 and opt=hda3 it is probably mounted. Use df to check it. It should be in the output.) This way the dsl packages are also loaded during boot.

3 - There is a MonkeyWeb server already installed I think.
Use DSLpanel on your desktop to start and stop it... This is a small webserver.

addition to notthemamma's comments....
1) If you have KNOPPIX on hda3 you will also need to use "toram" in order to have opt and home on this same partition.
2) Once you get your persistent home and opt working you can change /opt/.mydsl_dir to point to any writeable directory you want to save mydsl downloads.
