Apps :: Application v RAM v SWAP
Can someone tell me if firefox will always be so slow on 32MB ram and 128MB swapfile?
I dont think I will be able to upgrade my memory from 32 to 96MB, since I have a 1.4GB HDD and I am going to use my laptop for surfing and editing/writing essays etc. could I increase the SWAP file to be around 256MB or maybe more to ensure firefox etc can start up quickly and generally run faster.
Any tips on what to do will be greatllu appreciated.
Increasing ram or swap might help some, but in my experience on older hardware firefox will pretty much always run slow. You may want to look into using opera (it available in .uci form) or use dillo when possible.
dillo works beautifully on my 133Mhz with 32Meg ram....FireFox is a brute of a browser...just a default webpage from a fresh start uses like 12-14megs!

will I be able to download as normal from Dillo? I tries to click on a fle to download and it did nto do anything....it does look nice though. What about pages that use java or flash etc?
Is there any merit in running Opera? I want to try and get the best but I would rather have a "quick" laptop.
Yes
Especially for old computers, Opera is much faster than the size-optimized Firefox that comes with DSL.
In some situations, Opera is even faster than Dillo even though Opera is a full-featured browser like Firefox and Dillo is a minimal browser.
