It might be possible to use emelfm to view and change the ownerships and groups for your KDE so it will run as a user. Look in the /home/dsl/.fluxbox directory with emelfm to see what fluxbox uses. Mine uses "dsl" for the owner, and "staff" for the group.
Here's some command lines:
To change owner for a directory:
chown -R dsl /whatever_directory
To change the group for a directory:
chgrp -R staff /whatever_directory

I have to do that sometimes in a remaster. Then, when the new CD is made, I get those owners and groups for those files and directories involved. Since you have a hard drive install, perhaps you can try and see
if KDE responds somehow. I would look in something like a Redhat setup to see how the owners and groups for KDE (lots of files, directories, I'm sure) are done in that distro. I run KDE on Redhat 9 as a user all the time, and only have to give the root password to use KPPP and the Firestarter Firewall.
