water cooler :: The future of portable devices?

I have a Sharp Zaurus 5500, myself, and I cant tell you how many times I've been grateful for having the ability to carry my linux in my pocket. Now if only somebody would port DSL to the StrongARM processor ;-)
Looking at the specs I think it will barely run XP. If it has some kind of sleep mode I reckon the battery will be flat within a couple of hours, especially with a processor with that speed and a mechanical harddisk.

I have a palmtop and use it several times a day, probably about 30 seconds each time. Everything is in ram so you would expect it to load real fast, but it's just fast. And at 33mhz the battery only lasts about 2-3 hours (good for ~10 days).

Another thing with all these small gadgets is you have to look down to use them, not a problem for the hardcore geek, but a business exec walking around holding a cigar case looking at his shoes?

How come it has a mic and no internal speaker? Why do you need 3D accelerated graphics? No pcmcia or sd/mmc slot? The target audience is very specific.

I have a Zaurus c760 .. which is desparately awaiting a full opie update. ( I am not any kind of programmer,my brain aint wired that way.. ;) ) Sharp really dropped the ball. It came w/ a Japanese Rom on it.. and then was "localized" by the TKC folks , after which they suggested an update to their new ROM.. which turned the thing into a "brick"...

Mauch palaver later and I wound up between Cako and Opie. And am still there today...  BTW I have 1gig Cf cards for them ( there is an older 5500 Z which still has a Zaurus rom on it ) There would be more than enough room to put DSL on it and have space to spare for apps, and data !!

I actually wound up here because I have what is the oldest Thinkpad I've seen mentioned, so far.. and w/ any luck at all, I'm going to refurb it from it's currently running Warp4 on an 800 MB hard drive w/ a whole 24 megs ram, so my kid can have it in her sickroom.

Thanx heaps for the work you are doing, even if you are doing it largely for your own Geekiness.. I AM considering your DSL on a CF card w/ the nec. addapters, tho I would need more info on what to do w/ all that stuff once it arrives, I'm certain there are help docs somewhere around here ;)
