water cooler :: Magnavox Radio

Continued from the SCREENSHOTS, SCREENSHOTS, SCREENSHOTS thread..

This one is in need of a 12" speaker.
My younger brother took it out for his stereo 20 or so years ago,
not knowing it was a field coil unit..

It's got the green "Cat's Eye" for a tuning indicator.
Range is 5-18MHz SW , and the AM band. - built-in loop antenna.

I ended up with it..   it's beautiful when polished and waxed.
circa 1948 ..  I even found some ad copy on it from 1948 ..
( national geographic, I think )

I too have a weakness for the warm loveliness of old radios.

Ahhh .. God bless the thermionic valve, as beautiful a creation as the steam locomotive.

Nothing beats the sound of valves.....

still regret having to sell my Quad valve amps when a student :(

Here's a shot of my Magnavox that was salvaged from a similar scenario of a younger sibling removing speakers(2) for a stereo project.I replaced the missing speakers with one from an organ donor(Philco) and enjoyed many hours listening in on SW and using White's Radio Log for a reference. The radio was picked up at a resale shop in the late 60's.

WoW!
You have the FM addon..  cool..

I saw that option in the pages I found for my model..

Does it work well?

I found one at e-bay, but it was w.a.y. to pricey for me.
But always in search of that feature..

Did your organ speakers work OK ? ( old philcos )
any modifications to make them work?

I still have one original speaker in there, but need 1 more.
